For some reason, this image made me think more about the spread of pathogens in modern society. In today’s Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Health, the panelists testified that they believe “passive” measures of response to the swine flu is to be implemented over “active” measures, and by active the hearing specifically mentioned taking temperatures of every passenger coming in on a flight from Mexico. Some Senators didn’t seem convinced and couldn’t follow the panelists’ reasoning. In fact, the panelists in some cases simply stated in their “expert” opinion they believe such and such action should be taken, and could not provide a cogent answer to the Senators and the American public listening.
Some of the panelists included Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and Rear Admiral Anne Schuchat, CDC Interim Science & Public Health Deputy Director. Wow, that’s a mouthful.
